The mission of Tesla Materials Engineering organization is to deliver new materials and manufacturing processes that revolutionize Tesla’s products. We own the Tesla-specified materials available to Design Engineering, and we deliver that ownership through material selection, characterization, specifications, issue resolution, and materials design.
Role:
We are seeking an exceptional Materials Engineer in Shanghai to develop new thermal materials for Tesla products. You will still define and lead characterization and test campaigns when the work requires it, but the job is to invent and industrialize better thermal materials.
Your home discipline is metals: high-conductivity alloys, heat-spreader and heat-sink materials, sintered and porous metals, heat pipes and vapor chambers, and metal-based thermal interface systems. The method is materials-agnostic. You must be able to flex into polymers, composites, ceramics, coatings, or fluids when that is the better answer for the product.
Candidates should demonstrate the ability to rapidly acquire new expertise as Tesla products and processes change.
Responsibilities:
Materials design (primary)
Design and develop new thermal materials and the manufacturing processes that make them, starting from first-principles requirements: thermal performance, mass, cost, robustness, and process compatibility.
Build process-structure-property understanding for metal thermal solutions, including alloying, sintering, joining, surface condition, porosity, and interfaces, and validate hypotheses with targeted experiments.
Take a material from concept through launch with design, manufacturing, and supply chain partners.
Selection
Help designers choose the best thermal material for the application by boiling the problem down to fundamental requirements and material-property relationships.
Characterization
Provide the properties and models the analysis community needs to virtually validate designs with minimal physical testing.
Define and lead characterization and reliability campaigns, including thermal conductivity, interface resistance, temperature cycling, damp heat, vibration, and other methods as required.
Perform root-cause analysis of thermal-material failures using tools such as SEM, XPS, and TGA, and close the issue with an engineering solution.
Specifications and qualification
Own material specifications that define allowable variation, inspection methods, and requirements so that material delivered to Tesla matches what was selected and characterized.
Build processes that allow Qualification of suppliers and processes. Empowering appropriate teams to close the loop when production material drifts from the qualified state.
Issue resolution
Own thermal-material issues on products and in the factory. Resolve emergencies quickly, then run an after-action review so the same class of problem does not recur.
Requirements:
Master's degree or above (PhD preferred) in Materials Science, Metallurgy, Thermal Engineering, or a related field.
Solid process-structure-property understanding. Fluent in the underlying thermodynamics, heat transfer, chemistry, and statistics.
3+ years developing thermal materials, not only selecting, testing, or failure-analyzing them. Metals experience strongly preferred. Proven ability to work outside the home material family when the problem requires it.
Hands-on characterization: can design a test, run or direct the equipment, and interpret the data. Familiarity with thermal-conductivity methods (for example laser flash, ASTM D5470, ISO 22007-2) is valued.
Able to write a specification, qualify a supplier, and defend a material selection to design and manufacturing.
Strong communication. Manage projects independently. Influences without authority. This is not a people-manager role; you must still be able to lead technicians and vendors on characterization campaigns.
