Job Summary
The Vehicle Weight Engineer owns full-vehicle mass from concept through SOP: set and cascade targets, control deviation with live BOM and physical-weigh data, and deliver production mass that supports range, energy consumption, handling, cost, and manufacturability. Mass is a first-order constraint on every Tesla program — you will challenge every gram with first principles (material, structure, process, and packaging) and complete multi-attribute trade-offs with NVH, vehicle dynamics, aero, stiffness, and durability so mass reduction does not compromise core performance, safety, or reliability. You will work daily with Body, Chassis, Closures, Interior, Battery, Drive Unit, Thermal, EE, Vehicle Performance, and suppliers, and you will go to the prototype and production floor to weigh, tear down, and close gaps when reports and hardware disagree.
Responsibilities
Define full-vehicle mass and axle-load / mass-distribution targets from competitive teardown, product positioning, range/energy, and performance requirements; establish mass baselines for body, chassis, interior/exterior, battery, drive unit, EE, and accessories.
Cascade vehicle targets to system and part level, lock mass KPIs with each subsystem, and drive overweight items to closed-loop resolution.
Maintain a live mass database across concept, prototype, trial build, and SOP (BOM vs. physical weigh); flag overweight risk early and push structure, material, process, and packaging changes; weigh, tear down, and benchmark on the prototype or production floor when data is incomplete or inconsistent.
Evaluate lightweight options (material substitution, structural optimization, process change, layout iteration) and complete multi-attribute trade-offs with NVH, dynamics, aero, stiffness, and durability so mass reduction does not compromise core performance, safety, or reliability.
Review supplier design mass data, verify prototype and trial-build physical weight, and apply a common mass-control specification across the supply base.
Run regular mass reviews, quantify deltas, and track actions until the production vehicle meets release targets; document the vehicle mass process, evaluation standards, deviation criteria, and a reusable platform mass database.
Comply with company rules and procedures; actively identify and report hazards and incidents; propose safety improvements; continuously improve to create a safer workplace; practice the safety culture of “Safety First, Everyone is Responsible, See Something Say Something, Take Action.”
Qualifications and Requirements
Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Vehicle Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Materials Engineering, or a related field.
Working knowledge of full-vehicle development, body/chassis structure, materials, assembly, and manufacturing constraints.
Experience in vehicle mass cascade, competitive mass benchmarking, lifecycle weight control, or lightweight implementation.
Ability to reason through trade-offs among mass, range/energy, NVH, vehicle dynamics, stiffness, and durability, and to make decisions from physics and data.
Ability to own a mass database (BOM, weigh data, deviation tracking) and drive cross-functional delivery in a fast, high-ambiguity program environment.
Bias for action on overweight risk, with closed-loop follow-through.
Preferred: EV vehicle, battery, or body lightweight experience; steel/aluminum/composite applications; prototype or factory floor experience; Python or Excel for mass analytics.
