Senior Development Scientist

Role Purpose

Leads technical team in solving complex problems on new product and process development, with sound technological approaches. Designs experiments and develops testing methods to validate theoretical models. Recognized as an expert in one or more areas of science or technology. Understands Corning's Intellectual Property management processes and follows that process in documenting any Intellectual Property developed as part of a project or experiment. Builds networks of resources for effective execution of projects

Key Responsibilities

Leads development of theoretical models, new processes, new materials, testing methods or equipment to apply to process, design or manufacturing issues

Leads technical teams in solving complex problems on new product and process development

Designs experiments and develops testing methods to validate theoretical models

Develops new processes and improved equipment design

Develop products, processes and technologies to meet cost objectives and customer specifications

Provides technical leadership in troubleshooting

Communicates technical plans, technical solutions and approaches both up and down the organization to technical and non-technical audiences

May have direct report responsibilities including career development and ongoing performance feedback

Coaches, mentors and/or develops team members and emerging SMEs

Identifies, secures and prioritizes necessary tools and resources

Leads small to medium technical projects

Contributes to organizational, strategic or commercial problem solving

Links with commercial and new business organizations for product attributes, customer special requests, and other technical inquiries or testing

Uses and champions the Innovation Process and Manufacturing Excellence Engineering principles

Documents findings and communicates learnings through RTR Reports

Proposes solutions and/or invents, applies, develops, or extends a state-of-the-art technology. Consulted for technical guidance in their field and knowledgeable about related disciplines. Rigorously uses scientific and/or engineering methods and best practices* for their discipline(s) in problem solving. *(theories, principles and tools)

6. Delivers impactful results

Conceives, demonstrates, or implements technologies (measurement systems, processes, products, models/analytics, software, hardware, characterization techniques, equipment) that can impact sales, profitability, or that enable the advancement of projects or initiatives. Based on data and strong technical evaluation, identifies solutions and provides critical thinking or fundamental understanding.

7. Protects institutional knowledge & intellectual property

Contributor as a primary author on at least one formal written report or living document commonly used as a reference ** per year. Has documented at least three examples of intellectual property***.

** For example: R-Reports, NTRs, knowledge retention database reports, engineering-reports, posters, technical presentations, user guides, SOPs, etc.

*** For example: characterization technique, measurement system, model, patent application, data management /data engineering system, invention disclosure, process or product innovation, trade secret, or software asset, etc.
